Calico, Leucistic or Pied?
We have paired over 24 white type, visual Tokay together over the last 3 years and have some preliminary findings worth noting:
1) All the offspring except one appeared normal at birth. The one odd-ball had a patch of translucent scales. He later turned a mottled, speckled green, and then started to turn white. Gallery of Calico-Pied
2)It appears that the pied trait is in fact progressive. Meaning, it will develop over time. In the couple of know recent captive bred examples, this has started to develop between 8 and 18 months of age.
3)There are examples of the white extending to most, if not all of the animal. There are examples were they can continue to turn back to a dark grey, or melanistic looking state as well.
4)Several Granite look to be more like the pied at a later stage in the progression.
5)In early 2013 we paired the Calico looking Pied female, pictured lower left above, to a traditional looking Pied male, pictured on the lower left above. They produced 5 normal looking offspring and one, all white Tokay.
